COMPARISON OF LIKERT SCALE WITH VISUAL ANALOGUE SCALE FOR STRATEGIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS PLANNING MEASUREMENTS: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

The advent use of visual analogue scale (VAS) is noticeably absent in strategic information systems planning research. Most of quantitative studies conducted in strategic information systems planning (SISP) research have used Likert scale items. This paper examines the reliability of SISP measurement with VAS compared with the same measure using Likert scale. Two surveys were conducted involving the CIOs in medium enterprises established in Gauteng, South Africa. The results indicate that all sub-constructs have an acceptable reliability level for both scale (Cronbach's alpha coefficients above 0.70), except hostility sub-construct in the Likert scale items. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for visual analogue scales items were found to be higher than Likert scales items. By making use of this paper's results, SISP researchers can feel more comfortable in using visual analogue scale as the appropriate scale item in strategic information systems planning (SISP) research.
