Peroxide Optimisation Program: Port Hawkesbury Paper Mill

The Port Hawkesbury Paper mill, a world class maker of supercalendered papers, was restarted in October 2012, by Pacific West Commercial Corp. The mill recognised immediately that it needed to improve its economics to be competitive. Among other initiatives, Port Hawkesbury Paper worked with Evonik Canada Inc. to determine options to decrease the cost of pulp brightening. As a mechanical pulp mill, pulp brightening is a major cost for Port Hawkesbury Paper. Evonik applied its expertise and worked with the mill to investigate possibilities for decreasing cost or improving brightening efficiency. This was done as a three phase program - a lab study to examine possibilities, followed by mill trials to confirm potential savings, and lastly, full implementation of the new program.
