1 Biomass co-firing can play an important role in the expansion of biomass as renewable energy source; while reducing GHG emissions from coal power plants. With the 2020 forest biomass availability estimates, (Residues and Residues+whole-tree). significant replacement percentages for coal can be achieved. 2 Co-firing enables power generation from biomass with the high efficiency achieved in modern, large-size coal-fired power plants, which is substantially higher net efficiency than that a dedicated biomass fired power plant can deliver. Furthermore, co-firing can result in the reduction in corrosion, fouling and slagging problems caused by firing biomass alone. Likewise, any logistical issues with the biomass supply will not affect the overall power generation, since coal can be burned instead of biomass. This makes co-firing a much less expensive option than building a dedicated biomass power plant.
