ASEPTIC CARTON PACKAGES: RECYCLING REVIEW

This paper reviews and discusses different concepts to recycle post consumer aseptic carton packages. The average packaging composition is 75% paper, 20% low density polyethylene (LDPE) and 5% aluminum. The extracted pulp is used as raw material to replace OCC (old corrugated containers) and cellulose for different applications like carton boards, cardboxes, tissue papers, molded pulp for electronics and planting, cores and others. Polyethylene and aluminum (PolyAI) is recycled as a composite to produce plastic products, roofing tiles and can be separated by pyrolysis into aluminum flakes and paraffin. High consistency and low consistency repulping processes were compared and pulp properties like tear, tensile and burst indexes were evaluated for both processes. A comparison among virgin cellulose, and pulp from aseptic carton packages was done.
