Increasing anthropogenic emission of air pollutants such as fine particles, NOx, SO2 and volatile organic compounds has significantly caused the frequent occurrence of haze in China. In this study, a severe haze episode in Beijing induced by biomass burning in the autumn 2012 was investigated. A 3-stage cascade impactor was applied to collect atmospheric particles during the haze and clear episodes, and the fine particles collected on the second and third stages were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (TEM-EDX).
