My Electric Avenue: Integrating electric vehicles into the electrical networks

The My Electric Avenue Project studied the impact of electric vehicle uptake on Britain's electrical distribution networks by monitoring 200 customers for 18 months. Customers also trialled a new demand side response technology which delayed charging to support the distribution network. At current projections, we find that upgrading Britain's low voltage infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles will cost consumers approximately £2.2bn by 2050. This cost can be largely avoided if demand-side response is deployed to shift vehicle charging away from times of peak demand. Customer response to DSR has been found to be positive with no statistically significant difference in acceptance between customers who experienced DSR and those who did not.
