Innovative In-Situ Remedial Technologies for Petroleum Hydrocarbon Remediation

Innovative in-situ technologies have been implemented in the United States and the Western European countries to cost effectively treat the petroleum hydrocarbons in the sub-surface. These technologies are not only cheaper, but also effectively remove the mass faster than conventional treatment technologies for soil and groundwater treatment. This presentation will focus on the suitable in-situ technologies that are applicable for the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the Middle East. Some of the technologies presented will include: 1. Soils 1.1 Bio-Pile 1.2 Bio-Venting 1.3 Soil Venting (Soil Vapor Extraction) 1.4 Soil Mixing 1.5 Soil Stabilization and Oxidation 2. Groundwater 2.1 In-Situ Biodegredation 2.2 In-Situ Oxidation 2.3 Reactive Wall 2.4 In-Situ Sparging In addition to these technologies, this paper will include two case studies that describe the extent of the contamination, treatment technologies and methodology used, and the results of using these technologies. The case studies will be selected to be applicable to the Middle East conditions (geology, weather and applicable local regulations to be followed). The cost of treatment of each technology implemented in the case studies will be presented. The description of the different remeidial technologies discussed earlier is provided below.
