High barrier film for flexible packaging: challenges and latest solutions for the vacuum

"High barrier" film is relative definition since the concept is strictly dependent on applications: flexible packaging materials are the subject of this paper and shelf life requirement for the different products set the barrier properties level. The graph below [1] represents the present and future scenario for high barrier research in different fields and sets the position of food packaging on the upper right section , seemingly suggesting a moderate barrier requirement for this sector. If this stands true in absolute sense , the need of consistent and resilient barrier films for packaging at the lowest cost and high production volume makes the search for material and process improvement one of the most significant challenges in to-day industry.
