The development targets of Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR's) new 'Ingenium' engine were best in class fuel economy, performance and NVH behaviour. Key aspects for the achievement of the development goals was the optimisation of the combustion system. The combustion system development was carried out in close collaboration with FEV GmbH utilising the D-CMD process (Diesel - Charge Motion Design) in order to lay out the combustion system in a highly efficient way. Initial GT-Power simulations of the base engine system provide the boundary conditions for the layout of the ports and the piston bowl which is done by means of Star CD/CCM+ calculations. Subsequently the 3D-simulation code KIVA has been used to assess the nozzle layout and a suitable nozzle testing matrix for the later carried out single cylinder testing has been defined. The highly optimised combustion system was integrated into a comprehensive technology package featuring HP- and LP-EGR, advanced thermal management and design for lowest friction. This technology package enables class leading fuel economy, refinement and transient response.
