Land Rover up, Jaguar down: Land Rover sales may have risen last year, but Tata needs to combat falling Jaguar numbers

This week Jaguar Land Rover announced record profits for 2011, in excess of the ￡1 billion the firm made in 2010, and shifted an estimated 280,000 cars. At the time of going to press, parent company Tata had not yet released the final full-year sales figures for JLR. But the powerhouse behind these sure-to-be-impressive figures is Land Rover, whose sales hit 26,255 last December, up 53 per cent on the same month in 2010. Last year was also a big one for JLR's attempts to break into the booming Chinese market. Combined, the two brands shifted 42,063 cars there - 36,087 of them Land Rovers. By contrast, Jaguar's best month, in December, resulted in 945 sales in China. Although the JLR success story continued last year, it is clear that Jaguar is the weak link. Autocar estimates that Jaguar's 2011 sales will just nudge over the 50,000 mark.
