For proper characterization of process variability, estimation of the uncertainty of single measurements and optimization of sampling systems, variographic analysis is a powerful tool. Based on results from 60-100 consecutive samples, this approach can evaluate the total sampling and analytical error of sampling systems simultaneously with furnishing a 1-D process variability characterisation. This study characterises sampling systems in iron ore concentrating and pelletizing processes. All sampling and analysis variability components were quantified and analysed to evaluate opportunities for improvements of sampling systems and regarding process control. Variographic analysis revealed both well performing systems as well as systems in clear need of improvement. Important process variations were identified and improved process control could be demonstrated. This study supports previous conclusions regarding the significant benefits associated with applying variographic analysis to continuous industrial processes.
