Shipboard Corrosion: Classification and Characterization of Corrosion with Strategies for Prevention.

Uniform wastage is often considered in ship design and construction; the more aggressive corrosions however are often not considered until too late. Practical shipboard corrosion problems may have multiple mechanisms, dependent on the materials of construction and the corrosion environment. This paper discusses specific examples of combined corrosions to include galvanic and crevice corrosion in saltwater, sensitization due to welding or heat treatment and exfoliation behaviors in addition to wastage. The primary mechanism as well as accelerating effects are identified with recommended strategies for prevention.
