Electrospinning has emerged as a versatile method to produce submicron fiber mats or capsules from natural or synthetic polymers. These structures are of great interest for use in for instance food packaging applications. Thus, the technique can be employed to develop novel high barrier nanostructured interlayers. Furthermore, they can also be used for the development of smart energy storing materials, for encapsulation of bioactives and for controlled release applications. Core-shell electrospinning structures have proven to provide substantially higher loading efficiencies than simple component structures. Additionally, the application of multiple nozzle electrospinning processing is known to lead to a high throughput fiber or capsule production of great value for the scaling up of the production of these materials.
