0–3% Ho doped Bi_2MoO_6 samples were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction at 180°C for 20 h. Their phase, morphologies, atomic vibration and optical properties were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and UV-visible spectroscopy. In this research, the products were orthorhombic Bi_2MoO_6 nanoplates with asymmetric and symmetric stretching and bending modes of MoO_6 octahedrons, and their strong absorption in the UV visible region.
