Arsenic in groundwater, soils and crops of east side area of Ossa mountain, Greece

A survey was conducted in the east side of mountain Ossa, East Greece in waters, soils and plants to estimate As level. Some waters originating from springs on metamorphic basic ophiolitic rocks contain As exceeding the maximum permitted limit, amounting up to 37.20 μg L~(-1). Soils irrigated with these waters have high As concentration exceeding the usual background values reported worldwide for similar soil types. Vegetables grown on such soils were found to have high As concentration similar to those reported for contaminated with As areas. Further investigation is needed for reducing As involvement in human food chain.
