HURRICANE SANDY IMPACTS ON THE ATLANTIC COAST SHORELINE

Hurricane Sandy made landfall October 29, 2012 at approximately 8 pm EDT along the New Jersey coast near Atlantic City. The storm was the most destructive of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season and was the second costliest in US history. Hurricane-force winds (at least 74 mph) extended up to 175 miles from its center and tropical storm-force winds (at least 39 mph) extended up to 485 miles (780 km). The hurricane's strength and angle of approach produced record storm surge elevations in New York City.
