Mercator Océan, the French center for ocean forecasting , developed several operational forecasting systems (a model with an assimilation system) of the 3D-Ocean and produces oceanic reanalysis. In the framework of the European MyOcean project (www.myocean.eu.org), an operational system based on a global ocean/sea ice high-resolution model configuration (1/12°) has been launched in February 2011. This study presents results on the ability of the NEMO-based model component (ORCA12) (with no assimilation) in reproducing mesoscale variability. Results from eddies detection and tracking method using Okubo Weiss parameter and applied to the model outputs are also discussed. Eddies trajectories, eddies lifetime cycle and eddies numbering are particularly favorably compared with the Chelton’s [1] eddies detection method performed on AVISO maps [2].
