A STUDY ON THE APPEARANCE OF PAINTINGS IN THE MUSEUM UNDER VIOLET AND BLUE LED

The appearance of paintings under white LEDs using phosphors stimulated by violet LED (Ra > 95) and white LEDs stimulated by blue LED (95 > Ra > 55) has been examined by subject experiments, compared with the appearance under halogen lamps. The experiments were conducted in a mock-up room of a museum using the reproductions of western artworks and also in an actual museum with original paintings. The results of the mock-up experiment show that there is no statistically significant difference of the appearances, such as visual preference and moistness, between Ra95 (VIOLET LEDs: white LEDs stimulated by violet LEDs at 2700K) and Ra100 (halogen at 2700K). The results of the experiment in the museum indicate that the appearances of any paintings illuminated by VIOLET LEDs are evaluated positively regardless of the correlated colour temperature (CCT).
