Biomechanical analysis of foot orthoses on plantar pressure in pes cavus patients on gait

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of custom-made insoles in a subject group of pes cavus based on the foot pressure. The subjects were 10 females who had no history of injury in the lower extremity and the diagnosis of pes cavus was performed by a clinical participated in this study. The subjects walked on a treadmill under two different experimental conditions: 1) walking with normal shoes (NS), 2) walking wearing custom-made insole (IS) molded by a podiatrist with the aim of reducing the supination of the foot in shoes. When walking, plantar foot pressure data such as forces, contacting areas, peak pressures, and mean pressures in three areas (forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot) were collected using Pedar-X System. As a result of the analysis, when custom-made insoles ware equipped, the maximum force, the peak pressure and the mean pressure of midfoot increased by the increased contacting area of midfoot while the contacting area, the maximum force of forefoot and rearfoot decreased. In addition, the peak pressure and the mean pressure of rearfoot decreased significantly. Thus, the result of this study can be applied for designing functional insoles and lower extremity orthoses for individuals with pes cavus.
