New hyaluronic acid (HA) - itaconic acid (IT) materials have been synthesized as potential topical drug delivery systems (DDS) for ocular administration. In this work we have studied in vitro the biocompatibility between these new materials and the ocular surface, using for that purpose a human corneal epithelial cell line.The high complexity of eye structures represents an important challenge to develop drug delivery strategies. Conventional drug formulations for ocular disorders vary considerably depending on their nature and the location of affected tissues. (1, 2) Topical administration is preferred for ocular drug delivery to the structures in the front part of the eye, such as the cornea and the conjunctiva. Pre-corneal tear film and the corneal epithelium represent the front line to which an effective DDS have to interact. Preservation of tissue morphology and tears pH without alterations is the first requirement that a new formulation must fulfill.
