As a first step to develop a probabilistic model for the maintenance and repair of rubble mound seawall, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the statistical characteristics of deformation quantity. Ten wave flumes were constructed in a multi-directional wave basin and a conventional rubble mound seawall was placed in each flume. A total of 2700 data of the seawall profile were obtained. The statistical characteristics of the normalized eroded area S were investigated. The frequency distributions of S were approximated by the normal distribution and the standard deviation of S increased as the damage of the seawall progressed. The mean and standard deviation of the increment of S did not change much as the cumulative number of waves became larger.
