Employee Involvement and Management Commitment in Lean Implementation

Implementation of Lean Manufacturing in Indian Industries is not very successful. Studies have been conducted in this area and the main reason behind this has been identified to be human related issues, but no studies with regard to employees has been done. This Paper deals with a pilot study in a Tyre Factory. It is about the level of employee involvement and management commitment in implementing Lean Manufacturing. A survey questionnaire was developed and its validity was tested using Chronbach's alpha. The questionnaire was answered by the employees of the factory. It was found that lack of management commitment and improper communications have reduced the employee involvement in lean initiatives. Based on the findings, a case study was conducted in Horizontal Bias Cutter. Improving the working conditions based on the study helped to improve employee involvement. This helped in improving the overall efficiency of Horizontal Bias Cutter.
