The structural concept of the 16th century floors of the Ducal Palace in Sabbioneta (Mantua, Italy)

This contribution investigates the structural typology of the floors in the Sala dell'Angelo, Sala dei Grappoli, Sala degli Ottagoni and Sala dei Leoni in the Ducal Palace of Sabbioneta, near Mantua, which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage entries. The study will compare the structure of the floors in the Sabbioneta Palace with an analysis of the designs and descriptions quoted in treatises and in manuals writing. Aim of this survey is to demonstrate that the floors of the Ducal Palace represent a typological and structural variation of the method "alla Serlio". The similitude between the floors object of present study and some Spanish examples will also be examined.
