NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND SHIP DESIGN EDUCATION IN SINGAPORE AND NEWCASTLE: UNDER-GRADUATE LEARNING AND TEACHING THROUGH TO INITIAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This paper provides an outline of the current curriculum, course structure and key learning outcomes in the undergraduate teaching of Naval Architecture and ship design at Newcastle University, in both the United Kingdom and Singapore Campuses. It outlines how the key learning outcomes are achieved to ensure appropriate knowledge and understanding as well as how professional skills required are fostered before being developed further in graduates initial professional development on entering industry. This includes mechanisms for curriculum development and the role of accreditation of such programmes. In addition to undergraduate programmes, the role of taught postgraduate programmes, both full-time and part-time are described. Recent trends in the intemationalisation of both undergraduate and postgraduate provision to meet the global demand for skilled graduates will also be examined.
