Supercritical boilers and steam cycles are well established as the standard technology for new large coal fired conventional power plant throughout the world. In comparison Subcritical steam cycles are still the norm for Heavy Fuel Oil fired conventional power plants in the Middle Eastern market and world wide. An overview of the worldwide experience with HFO fired supercritical boilers will be presented. The presentation will examine the potential benefits from the increased cycle efficiency and lower emissions that can be achieved by adopting supercritical boiler technology on HFO fired plant. It will evaluate the risks associated with supercritical plant operation such as high temperature corrosion of the superheater and reheater sections, the impacts associated with more stringent control of water quality from the water pre-treatment plant and re- training of experienced operators. The presentation will also include a sensitivity study into the critical impact that oil price has on the potential decision to adopt supercritical HFO fired plant.
