15 STUDENTfacturED: A Biomanufacturing Classroom Enterprise for Innovative Student Training in Quality Regulations

One STEM field that has experienced dramatic growth in the past decade is biotechnology. This field has ties to a number of bioscience industry sectors including agriculture, environmental and industrial sciences, and health care (including drugs, diagnostics, therapeutics, personalized medicine, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices). In the 2001-2008 period, the number of U.S. bioscience companies grew by more than 28%, to approximately 47,600, and the number employed increased by almost 16%, to more than 1.42 million (Battelle, 2010).
