With Galileo, a satellite navigation system will soon be available that outperforms current GNSS in terms of technical features, services and reliability. For testing and validation of Galileo-based applications two terrestrial test beds have been installed. The locations of these installations are the new Automotive-Test-Centre ATC in Aldenhoven and the Testand Validationcenter in Wegberg-Wildenrath (Rail). These test areas allow for early development and calibration of applications to be available at the operational start of Galileo. In both test centers, complex driving situations with several vehicles at high speed can be tested in real-time without endangering public traffic. Within the test beds a position accuracy of less than 1m is defined, 0.5m is expected. As soon as under these conditions the applications in the vehicles are stable, further development and validations will allow for successively reducing the accuracy until real world values are reached. The Galileo Application Center Rail & Road is a Science-2-Business Center and knowledge pool regarding the use of GNSS in vehicular applications. Located at both facilities, it is closely acquainted with the terrestrial test beds automotiveGATE and railGATE mentioned above. This contribution includes three different aspects. At first it shortly introduces the system design of the new test beds using Galileo pseudolites. Then an overview is given on initial application projects which are realized on the basis of exact Galileo positioning and vehicular communication. Finally, the Galileo Application Center Rail & Road is the first contact for all questions related to the use of positioning in the automotive and rail areas. Services include realization of applications right down to implementation and vehicle integration/validation, flexible solutions for interdisciplinary problems of vehicular technology, provision of exact position and timing information in the test beds and substantial advice on and information about the use of Galileo in vehicular applications. A further benefit is the extensive knowledge about current projects and funding calls. Within the technological area of satellite navigation this centre will be the interface between university and industry and provide a prompt transfer of public R&D results into economically useful products and services. The contents follow a paper presented on NAVITEC (Hoelper, Poloskey, 2010), however, while in the earlier text the focus was on the introduction of the test facilities, this contribution will give more information on the Galileo Application Center.
