Combined heat and power production in CHP plant is the most efficient way of energy production: it enables to utilize approximately 90% of energy contained in the fuel. In comparison to separated energy production, CHP plant decreases in different ways negative influence on environment. Thanks to high efficiency, emissions to atmosphere per unit of produced energy are lower. In CHP plants there is a possibility to take advantage of vast spectrum of fuels, even those which are of low calorific value/ high humidity. It allows to use biofuels and household or industry waste. Taking advantage of local conditions ensures that the optimal actions are taken. In exploitation of CHP plants Fortum has a rule to use flexible and diverse power sources and constantly endeavor to increase renewable fuels usage. An example of Fortum investment activity in Silesia, which is a main area of interest of Finnish company in Poland, is new CHP plant in Zabrze, which will supply with heat inhabitants of Zabrze and Bytom, two cities of Silesian agglomeration inhabited with approximately 360 000 people. Thanks to the new configuration of peak load boilers constructed in both cities and the district heating network connecting both markets, the solutions which enable supplying both cities with heat in the most cost-effective, environmental-friendly and suited to local conditions way will be accessible. Fortum benefits from positive experiences from building with use of EPCM formula CHP Cz?stochowa in southern Poland – one of the most modern and with the lowest levels of emissions energy plants of that sort in Poland, and decided to apply the same formula in CHP Zabrze. The new investment in Zabrze fulfills restrictive requirements concerning its influence on environment, takes advantage of local fuel supplies and thanks to multi fuel technology, enables flexible adaptation to current needs. Applying fuel mix which includes coal, biomass and RDF, and other proven approaches being the best solutions for the following investment ensures that CHP Zabrze will be a plant of high efficiency and proven heat supply for inhabitants of Silesia. The commissioning is planned for the end of 2018 year.
