Advanced Materials Enabling New Specialty Paper/Paperboard Concepts: Leveraging Technology from Other Coating Applications

Many paper and paperboard manufacturers are developing specialty grades to offset the continued decline in conventional paper grades and to meet ever increasing demands for better packaging materials. These new grades may require use of new materials and processes. History has shown that migration of technology from one industry into another can be a pathway for rapid innovation. This paper will present examples of applications in other industries using two types of advanced materials - namely acrylic bead technology and hollow sphere pigments -that could be enabling materials for new specialty paper/paperboard concepts.
