The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident initiated by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami off the northeast coast of Japan has prompted numerous efforts to understand the event and assess its global implications on nuclear plant design and operations. These efforts will identify what changes are warranted in plant operations, designs, mitigation strategies, and emergency response planning. This paper describes EPRI efforts to evaluate the Fukushima accident and to support industry efforts to respond to the technical aspects of the event. The summaries describe the objective of the research, current status, and upcoming actions where applicable.
