Today's operations must be competitive in several areas to remain viable. Operating costs stemming from consumables such as chemicals and electricity must be kept low, the pulp quality must be good enough to meet the end user demands, and in order to maximize profits, the ability to maximize yield is an important consideration. Often, the final pulp quality or the overall operating cost is set at the very beginning of the process. Therefore, in systems that are operating over design capacity or subject to non-optimized conditions, it is important to go back to the root cause and avoid addressing the symptoms.
