Regulation of transport of small molecules through polymers is the basis for the use of such materials as gas separation membranes, water purification membranes, and barrier packaging materials. This presentation will present an overview of research designed to elucidate the relationship between polymer structure and polymer properties. Fundamental solubility and diffusion characteristics that give rise to observed permeation properties will be emphasized. Similarities and differences between the mechanisms of gas and liquid (e.g., ions and water) transport in polymers will be discussed.
