COMPLICATIONS IN URINARY SURGERY OF THE EQUINE ADULT MALE

Adult male urinary surgery is most commonly associated with castration, cryptorchid castration, or urinary calculi. The most common source of complications is secondary to castration.Castration of the horse is generally considered a very basic surgical procedure. The concept of performing a castration, is indeed, quite straight forward. However, the complication rate associated with castration has been reported to be as high as 20-38%. It is very important to discuss the possibilities of complication with clients prior to performing a castration. The complications discussed in this presentation include: Hemorrhage, Eventration, Swelling and Edema, Infection, Peritonitis, and Peniledamage.
