The terms of employment for veterinarians are best documented in a written employment agreement. Without a written employments agreement signed by both the employer and employee, it can be difficult to determine whether the employment relationship is"at-will" or whether there is a "guaranteed" term of employment. "At-will" employment relationships are employment relationships that can be terminated by the employer at any time, for any reason (cause or no cause) as long as the reason is not an illegal reason (i.e., race, religion, sex, marital status, etc.). All states recognize the "at-will" employment relationship but some states place limitations on it and, in some cases will imply that an employer cannot terminate an employee except "for cause". Therefore, to avoid any misunderstanding as to what type of relationship an employee and employer have, the employee and employer are best served by having a written employment contract.
