Jasinksi’s initial discovery that cobalt phthalocyanine catalyzed the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) launched many efforts in developing and studying metal phthalocyanines (Pc) and porphyrins as ORR electrocatalysts. Several decades later, it is currently well understood that highly active ORR electrocatalysts can be produced using elemental Fe, a N source, and a carbon support. Dodelet et al. have even shown that highly optimized Fe-N-C materials can rival activities of benchmark ORR electrocatalysts such as Pt.
