摘要

Fossil fuel is the largest and most widely used source of energy in the world. Major portions of the Fossil fuel are used as transportation fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. However, such crudes contain sulfur, typically in the form of organic sulfur compounds. The sulfur content is one of the most important properties which have a great influence on the value of the crude oil [1]. It is well known that the sulfur compounds are undesirable in refining process as they tend to poison catalysts used in refining processes of crude oils. Sulfur compounds are also responsible for causing several corrosion problems in pipeline, pumping, and refining equipment, as well as the premature failure of combustion engines and poisoning the catalytic converters that used in automotive engines. The biggest concern of the sulfur nowadays is driven by the environmental regulation which is putting stringent limits for the sulfur in the transportation fuels. The sulphur compounds present in light fuel are converted to sulphur dioxides which are considered major source of acid rain and air pollution. To control the SO_X emission severe regulations are being imposed on oil refineries to reduce the sulphur content to a low limit [2].
