Recently, there has been urgent requirement in the development of alternative fuels for aviation applications considering the growing shortage in the international oil supply and increasing concern on global environment. Fischer-Tropsch process provides the ability to convert syngas (from coal, natural gas, and biomass) into a cleaner and more economical alternative fuel. In 2008, the jet fuel specifications have been modified (MIL-DTL-83133F) to allow Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (SPK) derived from a Fischer-Tropsch process as a blend stock. The key properties of such a fuel is a maximum freezing point of -47°C, a minimum flash point of 38°C, a minimum density of 0.751kg/L at 15°C and a maximum viscosity of 8 mm~2/s at -20 °C.
