DETERMINATION OF ANIONS IN DISTILLERS DRIED GRAINS WITH SOLUBLES (DDGS)

Due to a growing interest in alternative fuels, the production and use of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) is expected to increase significantly within the next few years. Dried distiller grains are a co-product of the dry mill fuel ethanol process that provides three times the amount of nutrients available from grain alone when used as an alternative feed in ruminant diets. Because the composition of DDGS can vary from the ethanol production process, it is of significant interest to the distillery and feed industries to determine its mineral composition to formulate a nutritionally balanced ruminant diet. Here we show the determination of chloride, sulfate, and phosphate in DDGS on an IonPac~(TM) AS11 anion exchange column followed by suppressed conductivity detection in < 10 min. The method demonstrates good accuracy with spiked recoveries between 96-107% and good sensitivity with LODs from 1.7-5.7 μg/L.
