Effect of Mn Content in Ti-Mn-Al-Fe Alloys

Common commercial beta titanium alloys include V, Mo and Nb, which rarely exist on the earth, to stabilize the beta phase, are comparatively expensive to expand sales to consumer market. In order to develop low cost beta titanium alloy, Mn was adopted as a beta stabilizing element that has good availability. In this study, an influence of Mn contents from 8 to 12% in Ti-3%Al-1%Fe alloys (mass%) on mechanical properties after solution heat treatment was investigated. Through tensile and Charpy impact tests using solution-treated samples, it was found that the ductility and toughness increased with increasing of Mn content up to 10%, but ductility and toughness significantly decreased in 12%Mn alloy. Ti-10Mn-1Fe-3Al alloy has the best mechanical properties among the alloys used in this study.
