摘要

Whereas satellites provide a continuous monitoring of the visible earth, the ocean underwater environment is almost unexplored. Reasons are the ocean's inaccessibility and extensiveness, and the severe absorption of electromagnetic waves in water. In contrast, water is almost transparent to low-frequency (<100 Hz) acoustic waves. Consequently, monitoring the underwater environment mainly relies on acoustic remote sensing techniques.
