Bonding of cold sprayed aluminum on glass - a study with transmission electron microscopy

Aluminum (Al) particles in sizes from about 5 to 50 μm were cold sprayed on soda lime glass substrates. The microstructure and composition of the interface between the impacted single aluminum particle and the glass substrate were observed and analyzed with analytical transmission electron microscopy. A reaction layer with low density was found to exist at the interface between the Al particle and the glass substrate. The thickness of the layer ranged from 0 to 80 nm, depending on the size of the impacted Al particle. The layer was composed of amorphous and nano-crystalline grains structurally, and of the elements from the glass substrate and impacted Al chemically. It is suggested that the layer acts as a bonding layer to bond the Al and the glass substrate. The formation of the reaction layer is attributed to the high temperature and high pressure during the impact of the high velocity Al particle onto the glass substrate.
