Two different classical models are proposed for describing the interaction of H_3~+ with an intense laser field. In the first model, called the auxiliary potential method (APM), certain auxiliary, momentum-dependent potentials are added to the classical Hamiltonian. In the second model, called the soft-core potential model (SPM), the Coulomb potential is truncated at short distances and connected smoothly to a finite core potential by introducing a softening parameter. In both cases, the electrons are prevented from collapsing into the Coulomb singularity, which is a necessary condition to make the lowest-energy configuration of the molecule stable.
