It is widely accepted that oxidative injury and inflammation are intimately involved in the aging process and the development of age-related diseases. To date, most anti-aging strategies have focused solely on the delivery of exogenous antioxidants to combat the negative effects of aging. A promising new strategy is to identify nutrients and plant extracts that can directly target intrinsic cytoprotective mechanisms including: 1) upregulation of genes involved in the detoxification of xenobiotic and xenobiotic metabolites, 2) upregulation of genes involved in the synthesis and regulation of intrinsic antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes and 3) modulation of genes involved in the regulation of inflammation.The aims of this study were to: 1) screen and identify natural compounds for the ability to positively modulate the expression of a panel of genes related to key age-related pathways: antioxidant protection, detoxification and inflammatory pathways and 2) formulate and test a blend of ingredients that oppose age-related changes in gene expression of these key pathways.
