In order to explore the application methods and development potential of solar energy technology in facility agriculture, and to seek a solution to resolve problems existing in greenhouse production, such as high heating cost and serious environment pollution etc., an experimental study was carried out on a solar energy combined coal-fired boiler heating system used for greenhouse. In this paper, with Kunming Trifecta Orchid Nursery Co. Ltd of Yunnan Flower Demonstration Garden for experimental research object, the general design and operation method for the system were introduced, and an experiment on operation performance and heating effect of the system was tested in Kunming. The results showed that whether it was sunny or cloudy, the system could make full use of solar energy, make the water temperature of heat preservation tank reach a certain expectation, and ensure the temperature requirements on different growing stages of phalaenopsis in greenhouse. So a theoretical basis is provided for the study on solar energy combined with coal-fired boiler heating system for greenhouse. Through economic analysis of the system, the results showed that this system had high economic value, energy saving and environmental protection performance.
