This paper examined how and why a particular interactive learning environment influences computer engineering students on building conceptual and procedural abilities. The results revealed significant differences in the number and kind of cognitions students engage in, depending on the nature of the materials. These preliminary findings provide an argument for further investigation into the quantity and quality of learning interactions that come about due to faculty choices and provision of activities for students.
