The highly competitive nature of the automotive industry drives vehicle manufacturers to increasingly invest in the development of attributes which promote differentiation and support a brand identity. One such attribute is Powertrain Sound Quality, as experienced by both vehicle occupants and external observers. There are also increasing pressures on new vehicle programme timing, development costs and investment costs which provide further challenges to the task of delivering great sounding vehicles. Moreover, the trend to develop new vehicles which offer reduced consumption of resources through the implementation of lightweight structures, engine technology and alternative forms of propulsion can provide further constraints on the design for optimal acoustic performance.
