Depoling of PZT-Materials during Batch Soldering Processes

We investigate the influence of batch soldering processes on the polarization state of PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) materials for an efficient integration into SHM systems. Three PZT materials with two different metallizations were studied. As indicators for depoling the piezoelectric charge coefficient (d_(33)) and the coupling coefficient (k_(eff)) were measured both before and after heat treatments typical to batch soldering processes. Another indicator of depoling is the comparison of hysteresis measurements in poled, soldered and completely depoled samples. Our studies demonstrate reductions in piezoelectric properties, depending on the Curie temperature of the corresponding material and point the way towards efficient processing of piezoceramic components.
