Cathodically protected pipelines subject to time varient stray current affects corrode at a significantly lower rate than indicated by a Faradaic evaluation of the current discharge. This paper reviews work by others on the reasons for this; the mechanism and the effects of the reversible ferrous/ferric reactions, and passive film formation, on corrosion rates. An evaluation of the mechanism may affect the criteria used for evaluating corrosion status of pipelines subject to variable stray current effects.
