Steady state strength behavior of a particulate-solid interphase system

This paper presents a methodology for estimating the steady-state shear strength of interphase systems composed of granular materials and planar inclusions having various degrees of roughness. The microscopic mechanism of the proposed method stems from the contact force anisotropy of the particles that touch the inclusion surface. Based on this fundamental behavior, empirical correlations have previously been developed by the author to account for the peak interphase shear strength as a function of relative particle to surface geometry. It is shown in this paper that the same methodology applies to the steady-state shear strength behavior. Similar robust correlations are found to exist and effectively account for till the idealized and real surfaces tested in this study. It is anticipated that the current methodology can serve as a valuable tool in the practical design of geotechnical composite systems.
