External benefits from knowledge intensive business services: evidence from Russia

We investigate the role of the knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) as a cluster of postindustrial economic growth. Postindustrial economic growth is mainly achieved through a growth in service sectors, with little contribution from the manufacturing. Being a part of the service industry, KIBS are characterized by a high involvement of customers into the process of service production. This suggests that KIBS have an external effect on consuming sectors and thus generate extra growth in those industries. To explore this growth acceleration effect through KIBS, we use the data from a survey of Russian knowledge intensive service providers and consumers run in 2007-2010.
